Cathay Group completes rebuilding as Three-Runway System begins operations

Hong Kong International Airport will officially commission its Three-Runway System on 28 November. This major expansion project includes a new Terminal 2 concourse, an upgraded baggage handling system, and a new people mover, enabling the airport to handle up to 120 million passengers and 10 million tonnes of cargo annually. The expansion aims to strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a leading international aviation hub and meet the city’s long-term air traffic demand.

Cathay Group, Hong Kong's flagship airline group, has announced it will reach 100% of pre-pandemic flights from January 2025.

The Group, which includes Cathay Pacific and HK Express will continue to add more flights and destinations and is expected to operate passenger services to 100 destinations around the world within 2025, surpassing the 99 destinations it served pre-pandemic, marking a meaningful milestone for the Cathay Group.

Cathay Group has committed more than HK$100 billion in investments over the next seven years. The investment includes orders for more than 100 new-generation aircraft, world-leading cabin interiors and lounges, as well as digital and sustainability leadership. These efforts reflect Cathay Group's strong commitment to boost air travel and cargo capacity, elevate customer experience and further strengthen Hong Kong's status as an international aviation hub.

Cathay Group CEO Ronald Lam said:

“The introduction of the Three-Runway System will be a landmark moment for Hong Kong, one that ushers in a new era of possibilities for our home hub and its aviation industry.
“I am particularly pleased that the successful completion of Cathay’s rebuild coincides with the opening of the Three-Runway System. We can now truly put the pandemic behind us and firmly focus on the future.
“Our confidence in the long-term prospects of our home hub is as resolute as ever. As we look ahead to the many exciting opportunities that the Three-Runway System will provide, we are eager to continue doing our part to elevate Hong Kong’s status as a world-leading international aviation hub.”
